Happy Freakin' Holidays

My friend Margaret posted this news on her site for discussion and I just feel compelled to respond.

Directly from Paula White's Publicist: "Paula White's 22,000 member church, Without Walls International Church in Tampa, FL posted a semi truck-sized banner outside the church with this message (below), "To HELL With Happy Holidays" & "Put Christ Back In Christmas!", encouraging people nationwide to boycott stores supporting the anti-"Merry Christmas" message through their church, community, national television presence and website."

Warning: Soapbox Alert! I will rant here and then give this issue up.

To be precisely honest, this really pisses me off. Is this really a fight we Christians want to pick, given our already shaky reputation as peacemakers? Is this the attitude and the stance what we really want to emphasize at Christmas--or any other time of the year, for that matter? This is a cop-out. Forget defending the poor, or dealing with our own prejudices, but we won't stand for a commerical holiday to be defaced!

Because nothing says "Peace on earth and good will to all men" quite like "To hell with you."

Soundtrack: Bing Crosby, "Happy Holidays"

I was at work today, and overheard the following conversation between a delivery man (who probably says these kinds of things to a lot of people), and one of my coworkers.

Delivery Guy: Happy Holidays. I want to say Merry Christmas, but I can't. Company says we can't say anything about Jesus. Stop trying to offend people. Start offending Jesus and his blood.....

Co-worker: yeah, well, Merry Christmas, then.

Delivery Guy: There are those people up there in offices that don't know a thing about us. They also probably like homosexuals. Some kind of Sick-os. And they won't let us say Christmas. I love Jesus. Do you love Jesus? are you saved by his blood?

--just about the time I was getting really upset with him for the homosexual/sick-o remark, I realized that that is probably how I sound on my best day, to God, only he loves me more than I love that guy.

I'm the hypocrite. sucks.

Interesting--anger was a super common response among people to this.

AMEN! I don't think jesus is concerned with what we call it. He is concerned with our hearts. And banners such as this do not reflect the heart of God.

Hey Lo.. Glo here...
I did not hear about this one!
Really sad, isn't it? That church should have had a couple more committees meet concerning that idea,...right? Instead of a message to fill your heart with Love and Hope, it sends a message of....screw us all! (Excuse me for that ugly word)
