Motivation

motivation

n 1: the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal; the reason for the action; that which gives purpose and direction to behavior

Lately I haven’t been very motivated, especially when it comes to updating my blog. (In case you haven’t noticed.)

Have you ever thought about what actually motivates you to action? It could be a million different things that motivate—fear, jealousy, happiness, determination, goals, or other people. I’ve been very interested lately in why people do the things they do—or don’t do—and the amount of passion and determination with which they do them.

Take for instance the blog I posted back in November saying that we were about to go on The Budget to save for a house. We were so gung ho about that, but not surprisingly, The Budget never happened. Granted, we have been trying to not spend as much and save a bit, but not with rigorous guidelines. Or the fact that I’ve been wanting to get more involved in our community and find a place where I can invest myself. But again, no action.

There is an ocean of things that I want to do, but for some reason or another, can’t seem to garner the motivation to make them happen.

I, too, struggle with follow-through. I dream up a hundred things to do and struggle to make them actually happen. Sometimes, though, when I say them outloud to someone else, it really helps. Like I asked our group if they wanted to go bowling..everyone was like that sounds great. But now I have to call, find out details and make it happen. (Which I did today). But if I hadn't said it outloud to others, I would have let it just float around in my head for weeks without doing it.

I, too, am looking for ways to invest in my community and it's scary. I wish you lived here so we could volunteer together. It's scary for me to sign up or show up to something by myself.
