It's gut, ya?

So I'm currently proofreading an Amish Christian romance novel (yes, that's what I said) and finding much junior-high-girl pleasure in "John's rugged good looks and mysterious dark eyes" while envying "Lilly's perfect ivory skin and cornflower blue eyes." (Does anyone know someone on the Pulitzer board? I think we have a contender, people!)

Anyway, in this book the Amish speak a mixture of English and Pennsylvania Dutch. Halfway through, I just realized that many of these Dutch words are starting to sound familiar to me, not because I've read a hundred pages of dialogue using them, but because they are spoken daily by my eighteen-month-old:

gut: good
Danki: thank you
haus: house
ya: yes

Soundtrack: listening to David Gray, "Turn Out the Light"
